I write to...

I write to complete assignments. I don't like writing so I don't do it very often. I take many math courses and science courses to keep the writing to a minimum because I like math and science more. My english is not very good, and maybe it would improve if I practiced, but it is not enjoyable for me so I don't do it.

Commenting On Other's Blogs

I felt this exercise has helped me gain perspective from views I had not thought of before. It has intrigued me to some novels that I have not read yet. I definitely have a better understanding of education and how it is not all about factual learning, but about how it should be a balance of creative and factual education. I also found that I am not the only one who has developed greatly in high school.  I share experiences with others and how they are maturing and growing into adults. Overall, this exercise helped me understand views I had not yet though of, and understand education altogether.

Elementary School

This post is in response to this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBSgchJe2Z0&feature=player_embedded

I believe it is ridiculous how this school is operating. Children naturally need to play and have fun. Run around, let off steam, and just play. Taking this away from the children will only cause problems. And when you threaten to take it away because of bad behavior, it then becomes a downward slope, having more and more problems. This man sought out the right action, exposing his story to the public, for them to criticize the school and gain support from many. I believe the most amount of learning is done in the later years, where the earlier years are spent growing and learning about life. School shouldn't just be about learning math and science and english, it should be about becoming a more well-rounded person, and it is hard to achieve this when the school is only trying to make you an academic. We should not drill them too hard into studying and understanding every concept thrown their way. Let them have recess, and social periods because every child needs it. I believe this school should change it's structure and evaluate it's learning process.

RIP English

This post has been made in response to this news article. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/booknews/9729383/Catcher-in-the-Rye-dropped-from-US-school-curriculum.html
I show, in this post, how english has helped and influenced my english course career.

1: Books I have been exposed to over my english courses
The Giver
Lord of the Flies
Death of a Salesman
To Kill a Mockingbird
Macbeth
Catcher in the Rye
Twelfth Night
The Reader
Romeo and Juliet
A Midsummer Nights Dream
Message from Pigman
51% Minority
Inherit the Wind
A Modest Proposal

2: My experiences reading these novels
The Giver:
  • ·            I felt very involved and eager to read more.
  • ·            I learned that there might be more to the world than what we know about in our life.

Death Of A Salesman:
  • ·            It was a sad play and made me feel a lot of sympathy for the father.
  • ·            Learned about Marxism and the American Dream.

To Kill a Mockingbird:
  • ·            Very good book, I really enjoyed it.
  • ·            It was about racism and how we accuse the innocent just because of their skin colour.

The Reader:
  • ·            It was a boring book, and a grind to get through.
  • ·            I learned about tainted memories and how sometimes the past can never be forgotten.

3: The value of literature
I believe that the value of this literature, on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 having no value and 10 being incredible valuable), is a 7. I believe that it is very useful to study literature and see how each author depicts their words. How each style of writing is shown and is studied. I also believe it gives us knowledge of many things, like racism (To Kill a Mockingbird), philosophy (The Giver), etc. English is the only mandatory course in high school because our main language in Canada is English. Everyone needs to know how to speak, read, and write English at a decent level. English class is there to help advance your level of understanding of the language, so when you move on after high school, you can seem intellectual and understand most of the English language. There are some things though that are not very useful, like short stories.

Poems

These poems have been made from novels I have read in english courses.

I am from an alternate reality,
            Your age is your grade,
            Surveillance uses thermal detection,
And you are not allowed out.

I am from Uganda,
Forced to fight by a scary man,
I am a child in a child army,
I just want to go home.

I am from District 12,
Forced to fight in a sick game to kill people,
            I won,
And I am scared for my life.

I am from a little town,
            A courtroom,
            Injustice,
            And innocence

I am from post-war Germany,
            True love,
            Tainted memories,
            And guilt and shame.

I am from you know who,
            Hogwarts,
            Gryffindor,
            And immortality.

I am from the slums,
            Looking for my love,
            On a gameshow,
            And won 1 million rupees.

Value Of English

My Education

My grade 12 year has been more serious to me than any other year in high school. I feel that I am caring more about my academics because I feel really pressured to be accepted into university. I feel I am working harder and becoming more of a well-rounded student/person. In previous years my academics haven't been the greatest so I feel I really need to improve them this year. No other moments stand out in my high school career. I feel smarter as a person now that I have gone through this transition. This transition happened during the first month of grade 12.

Definition of Education

Learning about the basics of everything in the world. For example, earing about sciences, maths, the environment, languages and culture, the arts, etc. This knowledge will set you up for whatever you decide to do in your future. Without education, your future will most likely be unseccessful.
